Application Guide

Your 10-Step Journey to Postgraduate Success

Follow this simplified process to complete your application and enrollment.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

To qualify, you must hold one of the following in a related discipline:

  • A good BA, BEd, or BSc. Honors Degree (ZNQF Level 8).
  • A Master's Degree (MA, MCom, MSc, MPhil) (ZNQF Level 9).

Your academic background must be suitable for the intended area of research.

Step 2: Prepare Application Documents

Get the following essential documents ready:

  • Concept Note (1-4 pages) describing the proposed working title, research problem, objectives, methodology, and expected contribution.
  • Certified academic and professional certificates.
  • Additional artefacts or publications (if applicable).

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Apply through the official MSU Postgraduate Portal:

Alternatively, email your application to postgradoffice@staff.msu.ac.zw.

Ensure you upload all required attachments, including your Concept Note, Certificates (Honours degree and or Masters), ID/Passport.

Step 4: Application Review

The review process focuses on the suitability and relevance of your concept, inter alia:

  • Relevance to national development and research priorities.
  • Assignment of qualified supervisors to your research area.

Step 5: Receive Provisional Registration

Upon positive recommendation, you will be granted Provisional Registration for ONE semester (up to six months).

During this period, you will work closely with your allocated supervisor(s) to develop a detailed, full research proposal .

Step 6: Apply for Full Registration

After your successful proposal presentation and approval, you will formally apply for Full Registration , which is granted by the University Senate.

Step 7: Begin Full-Scale Research Work

The full duration is 4 years (48 months) for the PhD and 2 years (24 months) for the MPhil from the date of full registration. Key requirements:

  • Submit progress reports every semester.
  • Maintain regular contact with your supervisory team.
  • Attend all relevant workshops and seminars.

Step 8: Publications

You must produce peer-reviewed publications derived from your research before thesis submission:

  • MPhil: At least one article in an accredited journal.
  • PhD: At least two articles in an accredited journals.

Step 9: Thesis Submission & Examination

Submit your supervised, proofread thesis with a plagiarism similarity score of less than 15% .

The examination process includes a Viva Voce (oral examination).

Step 10: Completion and Conferral of the Degree

The final steps:

  • Submit copy of the final examined thesis.
  • Receive your degree conferral at the next official Graduation Ceremony .
  • Your final degree, academic certificate and transcript are issued.
